Li-Fi is a wireless technology that transmits high speed data using visible light communication (VLC). According to the current research, Li-Fi, is currently 100 times faster than the current average Wi-Fi speed at 1GB per second. Li-Fi was invented by Harald Haas back in 2011 using LEDs to show just how much data can be transmitted – Harald Haas has managed to achieve the equivalent of downloading 18 movies per second!

Here Harald Haas himself explain and demonstrates how this works.

The great thing about Li-Fi over Wi-Fi - other than the speed - is the fact that it is secure. Light cannot travel through walls therefore interference between devices is hindered.

Cuthbertson claims that this new discover will not replace Wi-Fi but would ideally work together in order to create a more reliable and efficient network.

Our homes, offices, and industry buildings have already been fitted with lighting infrastructure so when Li-Fi becomes common place in the market it would simply be a matter of changing LEDs to PureLiFi’s Smart LED which is cheap and easy solution. The point of Li-Fi is to produce both Illumination as well as Communication.
