Form Follows Function. Classic saying in the design world, whether or not you follow this rule.
Phillipe stark and Dyson are two of the most famous designers that come to mind when it comes to this matter. The big debate of function design vs Aesthetics design is something that has come up alot since i started studying product desing, even in secondary school. Many designers are still trying to find the balance.
I guess this is a marketing aspect. What good does it do to make something that works if no one wants to buy it. The great underdog story comes to mind. Apple Inc. on the verge of bancruptcy but then Jonathan Ives comes along and saves them. Look at them now.

Steve jobs designed and built the original iMac, only problem was that no one was buying it. Until Jonathan Ives called up from London and said that he can help. The pure genius of simply changing the caseing into slightly see through plastic in different colours. THEN they flew off the shelf. Nothing was different about it. Same software, same shape, same size, same speed. But because of the way it looked it was a craze.
Even though I am a firm believer of putting function first, you must admit that aesthetics takes you all the way.
